Yes, I remember this. Yes, I can describe it.

A giant, blue head constructed by a bone-like structure is floating in the faint yellow sky. With the right eye destroyed and emitting smoke, the head mournfully fades into gray ashes. It was my 20s when some of my best friends were suffering from depression and bipolar disorder, it was 2013 when I first met Polish artist Zdzislaw Beksinski’s work AA80, then wrote my first exhibition proposal about artists who had mental issues in the modern art class.

Most people describe Beksinski’s paintings in his most famous Fantastic period as macabre and sadomasochistic, as the subject is often distorted human bodies with outward bones. But what obsesses me is not his gloom, hellish style, but the imagination of unearthly architecture built by, or, above human form, which forces us to hold the reverence of the fantasy of being a collective complex in a desolate world. His painting can be considered a mirror which reflects the sorrow of losing family and the instability of emotion that is affected by brutal memories, but it is also a puzzle to mentality, that our brain does not always function as a creativity machine, it mostly recalls trauma in life repeatedly, and moreover, to reinforce discomfort through art and passes it on to other people involuntarily.

Looking at Beksinski’s paintings, I can’t ignore their hidden meaning — under control. Is the visionary triggered by sensory experience, by the appreciation of good things, or primarily accumulated from the trauma? After one of my talented artist friends had commit suicide twice yet failed, I wondered: Is pain necessary to the achievement of the best art?

Since then, I have had a mixed feeling about machines being easier to understand than humans, in other words, machines are more stable and predictable,

Then you don’t remember a world without robots. There was a time when humanity faced the universe alone and without a friend. Now he has creatures to help him; stronger creatures than himself, more faithful, more useful…But you haven’t worked with them, so you don’t know them. They’re a cleaner better breed than we are.

In Issac Asimov’s robot series(I.Robot, The Complete Robot), Susan Calvin, a robopsychologist, has used her deductive skills to solve the problems during their journey of exploring outer space with robots. More than humans, Susan Calvin understands robots like she is a friend of theirs. I can’t help comparing Susan Calvin’s robot psychology theories to Asian culture, where we’re programmed by the spoon-feeding education system to grow up as a robot-like better human who serves the authorities — parents, teachers, supervisors, and politicians. This experience is exactly similar to the way people train robots and AI — engineers feed them a great amount of data, theories, and try to reinforce the mindset of ethics. This is where things begin to go wrong.

In 2014, the first mass stabbing spree directed at random civilians took place in the Taipei Metro and caused 4 deaths and 24 injuries. Born in the same year as me, the 21-year-old attacker admitted to being tired of living without emotional support from friends and family, “Even if my parents were on the train, I would have killed them.” The 2014 Taipei Metro attack shocked the entire society, revealing the problems of our education system and how fragile our young individuals are. With the popularity of social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, interpersonal relationships in the real world have become polarized, with people either feeling more connected to their closest friends or becoming more isolated in the virtual space. It did bring up the discussion of mental health and cyberbullying in Taiwan, however, sadly, after two years, a tragedy happened again, a child was killed on the street by a man who had schizophrenia, with her parent’s witness. Angry, or at most, we fell into despair. If modern technology and medical treatment have a hard time curing individuals, then maybe the problem is not from individuals, but from the entire society, the system. Humanity may be the root cause of problems, not technology. When necessary, engineers have to destroy all the code and rewrite it in order to fix a bug that appeared on a single robot. But can we execute this within our civilization? Asimov’s fictions and robopsychology theory are important supports of my study in Digital Media Art at SJSU, where I started to think about the possible humanity existing in machines, and how much potential robots and AI can teach us.

I’m not afraid of technology. Why should we? In her project LAUREN, artist Lauren Lee McCarthy attempts to become a human version intelligent assistant and embeds herself — custom-designed smart devices including microphones, cameras, switches, and other electronic devices into ordinary families, in order to watch them 24/7, to understand them and become their friends. “Laren is helpful.” , “Lauren is talking about me, is always about me.”, “Sometimes I even forgot she is there.”

The LAUREN experience is ultimately about presence.

Yet this presence is predetermined and mechanical, it blurs our definition of being human. Lauren is able to help people to rebuild their self-esteem or provide for their most personal needs not because McCarthy interacts with people in person, in human form, but because she hides behind technology, designs a robot-like voice, plays a good role in being an AI, and analyzes things like algorithms as if she is trying to be less human. She is still self-aware, with her mind partially manipulated by the participants and educated by the modern imagination of an intelligent assistant, whose personality is usually based on a real person. Lauren Lee McCarthy’s project illustrates an alternative hope that we shouldn’t be afraid of AI, whether it’s a human or a robot doesn’t matter, whether AI is smarter than humans doesn’t matter. We deserve to be present, no matter what form we take, whether we’re conscious or unconscious. We deserve to be present.

So I’m here, I’m sitting in front of a computer different from the one you are in now. I am writing the essay of my flowing thoughts and I am going to download it from Google Doc to my computer again and again until the file compression mechanism of the internet destroys itself so that any semblance of my essay, with perhaps the exception of the file size, is destroyed. What you will see, then, are the natural glitches of the machine articulated by uploading. I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of a physical fact, but more as a way to smooth out any irregularities my essay might have.

I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording the tone of my speaking voice and I am going to play it back into the room again and again until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves so that any semblance of my speech, with perhaps the exception of rhythm, is destroyed. What you will hear, then, are the natural resonant frequencies of the room articulated by speech. I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of a physical fact, but more as a way to smooth out any irregularities my speech might have.

The more I am Alvin Lucier says, the less present he is, the less real his speech is. The result of this sound piece is a captivating paradox, in which Lucier’s voice ends up becoming unrecognizable, while at the same time it generates a piece of unique music that is not immediately recognized by the audience. As Lucier’s individual subjectivity gradually disappears in the performance, he leaves the electronic devices to dominate the composition of sounds and the use of iterations, which shifts the experience of listening from the emphasis of notes, music, instruments, materials, to our relationship with the self-generated auditory phenomenon of environmental sounds and everyday objects that we tend to ignore. This is art about listening. To pay more attention to the outside world is to be less critical of individuals’ characteristics. Subsequently, the audience gets used to more and more distorted iterations, even though we might forget the original message of Alvin Lucier’s speech, yet we appreciate the different repetition each time, we enjoy the resulting copies. We like copies.

Maybe it’s because we live in a world constructed of copies. The society is much more tolerant of replication than unicorns. Crl+C and Crl+V are some of the greatest innovations on the earth, empowering human beings to collect, learn, and mimic our desires easily.

We are sometimes like Neo in the movie Matrix who casts the book, Simulacra and Simulation, encapsulates our desire, belief, and hope in, that eventually turn into the truth that we keep pursuing every day. “The simulacrum is never that which conceals the truth — it is the truth which conceals that there is none. The simulacrum is true.” According to French sociologist Jean Baudrillard, all symbols and signs(simulacrum) in real life are manifestations of real objects, thoughts, ideologies, fantasies.

To run simulacra, we build a system, a program, a simulation. At the first stage, a faithful image copy (a photograph), would still reflect a profound reality(real landscape), but after the second render and third render (digital paintings and prints…), the copy no longer has an origin. After reaching the fourth stage, the simulacrum(3D render images in virtual space) has no relation to any reality, hence, questioning its origin becomes meaningless. Jean Baudrillard argues that contemporary media such as TV, radio, mass media, and the internet have been producing tons of simulacra and blurring our real needs and needs created by commercials, as if we never inquired the intention of buying an iPhone, drinking Starbucks, creating multiple social media accounts. We just buy it, even though it is just a copy of hip culture, a reflection of emotional support, we just buy it. We love copies.

Jean Baudrillard’s definition of art also strikes me:

And so art is everywhere, since artifice is at the very heart of reality. And so art is dead, not only because its critical transcendence is gone, but because reality itself, entirely impregnated by an aesthetic which is inseparable from its own structure, has been confused with its own image.

As a digital media artist, what I’ve been creating might kill reality.

So what should I do if I sense the inner conflict? I pray.

Prayer may be the antidote for anxiety, or a prophecy of destiny. Laurie Anderson has already demonstrated it. Her 1981 performance, driven by a rhythmic and repeating robot-like voice loop, starts the story with the monologue of a prayer, who might prayer to a powerful figure or an authority:

O Superman. O judge. O Mom and Dad. Mom and Dad.

Then she juxtaposed between the sinister messages and hope by using a mysterious phone conversation,

Here come the planes.They’re American planes. Made in America.Smoking or non-smoking?And the voice said: Neither snow nor rain nor gloom

Or

So hold me, Mom, in your long arms. So hold me,Mom, in your long arms.In your automatic arms. Your electronic arms.

She created this song after the 1979 Iran hostage crisis when a helicopter and a plane crashed outside Tehran during the rescue. After the record’s release, it became the best-known song O Superman in the 1980s. At the very beginning, the failure of technology is what drove Laurie Anderson to write this song, and it also becomes part of the core message it, as well as the uncertainty, feeling toward her homeland country America. O Superman took on a prophetic meaning after 911, which again proves that Americans are still fighting the same war. The conflict between the east and west is still there. In 2020, a plane crashed again, Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 was shot down in error by Iranian missiles, according to all Western officials. What makes things dangerous is not because they’re a danger, but is because we ignore the alert signs and all possible results. Just as if we expect that participating in a virtual world can increase self-esteem, as if we expect that technology can solve comprehensive systematic problems of the society, as if we expect that AI can make life smarter. Once we give the authority to the others, to the simulation, we lose the power to recognize the truth.

And I said: OK, who is the truth really, who is the reality?

And the voice said: This is the hand, the hand that takes over.

O Superman. Omen.

Epilogue

According to the dictionary, a labyrinth, or a maze, is a complicated irregular network of passages or paths in which it is difficult to find one’s way. Scientifically, the maze is used to test if animals or robots have low-level intelligence, psychologists also use mazes to distinguish personality traits. A labyrinth, simple or complicated, indicates the multiple-choices and the lesson from troubles that allows us to get away from Minotaur.

1. 2011–2015: In Taiwan, early 90s babies born between 1990–1993 graduated from university and started working for a job. It was when some of my friends started to experience depression, anxiety, and some other mental illnesses. People who worked in the art and film industry were especially struggling due to the low pay and terrible social status.
2. 2014: The shocking Taipei Metro Attack happened, but it was also the year when I went to my first digital media art exhibition.
3. 2018: I arrived in the USA and created my first Net-Art featuring a Javascript chatbot.
4. 2019: After breaking my old Macbook, I bought a new one but it starts to generate weird glitch arts frequently. My friend committed suicide and failed, again. Now I am still receiving naturally occurring glitch images.
5. 2020: The outbreak of COVID-19, reveals the fragility of the medical system in every country, yet the stay at home order also inspires people to communicate and live normally by making full use of digital tools, which leads us into a complete hyperreality world, just like what it is mentioned in Simulacra and Simulation, that questioning the reality of what we’re experiencing now is meaningless, virtuality is a truth.
